Actionable Tips On How to Find Your Values [Living Authentically]

This topic of how to find your values is an important one, so I’m going to give a rundown of some actionable steps you can use right now to find and drive from your values versus someone else’s that you picked up along the way. This is one big step to living life in an authentic way FOR YOU. This connects back to my previous post about what it means to give zero fucks (so you might want to read that one too).

In my book, Disasters to Dreams, I have exercises at the end of chapters called WAY (or “What About You” sections) which are moments in the book that I created to help readers stop, grab something to write with, and gain some perspective on a topic. It’s an opportunity to find actionable steps you can use right now versus waiting for some future time that never comes.

Get something to write with because we’re going to do a little work (or if you’d like to get the book to do the entire exercise, grab that here and go to the end of chapter four).

Let me be clear about what values are: values are things that you innately believe in and know to be important to you and do not need anyone else’s stamp of approval. Your values help you remember how to overcome fear of uncertainty. These values within you don’t require anyone else to tell you they’re right for you.

Many of us can have similar values, which helps us build solid relationships. And, I believe that what you value most—in my case, my top value is freedom—will dictate how you live your life and what success will ultimately look like for you.

Values are not opinions or emotions; they’re solid foundational truths that we hold. Living from our values is how we step into authenticity and move towards the zero fucks attitude. When you realize that you don’t care about what others think about what you feel, what you think, and what you love, you’re on that success path towards authentic living!

As long as you haven’t been a dick to other people and did what you wanted to with your life and not what other people told you to do, you can die happy. This is closely connected to creating success. The closer you live to who you authentically are and give zero fucks about people telling you who you should date, or what music you should like, or what jobs you should take, the greater your chances are of not just succeeding, but succeeding beyond your wildest dreams.

So, what about you? Grab something to write with and take a moment to answer the following questions:

Do you know your values? Take a few minutes to write them down. If you don’t know them, here’s the time to do a quick search online for “value words” and start figuring them out (remember, do not consider anyone else as you write these to discover what you value first and foremost).

Do you stay true to your values in your career/business/daily life? If so, how? If not, why? Have the opinions others have had about you stopped you from doing something that you knew you really wanted to do? If yes, why and when? What dream job or career path have you had that you haven’t pursued due to fear and the discouragement of others?

When you start uncovering some of these things, you’ll probably realize some big reasons your life has been held up in different areas or at other times (like I did). You’ll also see those moments when you should have said, “I don’t give a fuck” but didn’t.

Now is your opportunity to believe in yourself and your own abilities and be unapologetic about who you are.

Get the whole “What About You” (WAY) exercise when you grab my new book now!
