5 Proven Ways to Be Successful In Life
Everyone wants to be successful in life! So, what does it mean to be successful in life? To me, it means being free (financially and creatively).
While my quest for freedom and for success in life has included some painful, hard lessons, the good news is that I have gained some empowering knowledge along the way. I have a lot to be grateful for, and because I like to share valuable information with others, I want you to know these five proven ways I have found that can help you create a life you love.
I have learned these qualities through my own experience and by observing others who I consider to be successful in life. In my new book, Disasters to Dreams, there are sections at the end of each chapter called WAY (which stands for What About You?) where I give accounts of life lessons myself and people I’ve met have had, and then ask you to think about times in your life where similar lessons can apply. As you read this article, you may want to take some time after each section to write down some notes about occasions where you have had applicable experiences.
Practicing the tips below can give you more self-empowerment, fulfillment and enjoyment of life. And if you are curious about how to have a successful business, mastering these qualities will be advantageous for that as well.
I know what it’s like to be a small business owner. I also know what it’s like to have a thriving small business go belly up. And today, I can say I know what it’s like to be living a real life and business success story. If you want to know all the gory details about how I turned some pretty bad disasters into really big dreams, you’ll have to check out the book. But, for now, let’s focus on the juicy tidbits of wisdom I’ve gleaned from the rocky roads I traveled to get to the life of my dreams.
1. Have fun.
Did you know you’re actually smarter when you’re having fun? It’s true. People learn and retain information better when they are enjoying themselves. Not to mention the positive energy we attract when we’re having fun. Not that anyone really needs a reason to have fun. It may seem like a no-brainer, but sometimes people can get WAY too serious about creating success, especially when it comes to manifesting money.
My entrepreneur friend Jenisse was able to maintain her sense of fun even after losing two salons she had built from the ground up. She picked herself up, dusted off the debris, and thought about what was fun for her. Then, she went to work creating a new business doing what she loves: make-up, nails, and fashion clothing. She’s having more fun now than ever and it’s because she chose to follow the fun instead of letting the failed salons keep her down. Learn more about Jenisse’s story by turning to page 32 in my book.
As for me, I’ve found it pretty easy to follow the fun during certain parts of my life. There was one period where I lived as a snowboard bum in Breckenridge, CO, and devoted my life to having fun on the slopes. And guess what came out of it? My first business! You can learn about that exciting adventure and how it unfolded in my book as well, along with some other fun (and not so fun) adventures that led to and boosted my future business success.
2. Be authentic.
This tip ties into the first one. I would say it’s impossible to have fun if you’re trying to be something you’re not. We all have qualities that make us unique and interesting. And just because some people don’t appreciate those qualities is no reason to sweep them under the rug or pretend to be someone else. In fact, when you allow your authentic self to shine, that’s when you find others in the world who are attracted to “your kind.” And I don’t know about you, but I have a lot more fun when I’m being true to myself, and hanging with people who resonate with my brand of weirdness.
Rich Lopp has a business success story that serves as a wonderful testament to being authentic. He had made YouTube videos in the past that never went anywhere, because, in his words, “I didn’t have anything that was worth anything.” But, when he made a video on a whim about astrology (something he had a genuine interest in), it ended up getting 20,000 views.
That video eventually led to a successful YouTube channel, something he had tried unsuccessfully for a decade prior to that to create. It didn’t come to fruition until he created something that resonated with his authentic interests. Rich’s story is told in my book in more detail (on page 64), so check it out if you want to learn more about the success he achieved by being authentic.
It is my belief that the closer you live to who you authentically are, the greater your chances of succeeding beyond your wildest dreams. What you value most should dictate how you live your life. It’s how I’ve lived my life since I was a teenager, and I’m very grateful for the circumstances that taught me the importance of that truth!
3. Help others.
Providing help for others is a beautiful way to reinforce joy in your life. Most of us feel happy when we make someone else happy. That’s why when you help others to succeed, you automatically move closer to success yourself (Remember tip #1?)
I’ll use Jenisse as an example again. She knows that being generous to others inspires others to be generous, and that helps make her own business grow. Jenisse gives small gifts to people who do little things for her business (like positive yelp reviews and such). As a result, some of her business relationships have turned into friendships because of this mutual support and encouragement. She knows that no man or woman is successful without friends.
When I chose to help someone out by giving him a job in my tattoo shop, we eventually became business partners and created a thriving business together.
You never know when someone you helped out will come through with an exponentially more valuable repayment in the future.
4. Stay open.
While it’s a good practice to follow your dreams and passions, it’s also good to stay open to other possibilities. This may involve going outside your comfort zone. Sometimes the universe has something even better than you imagined in store, and if you are holding on too rigidly to YOUR plan, you might miss the good stuff the universe is trying to give you.
This came into play in a major way in my life when my wife and I were trying to adopt a child. We didn’t end up getting the child we had been expecting. It was devastating, especially for my wife. But, after some tears and heart to heart talks between the two of us, she decided she was going to be positive and stay open to whatever God had in store for us. Both of us made a decision to look forward in hope. The very next day, we got a phone call that led to us getting our beautiful daughter! The universe must have been listening.
5. Know your shit.
This is a big one on the list of successful entrepreneur qualities. I put this to practice when the body piercer at my tattoo and body piercing shop had to leave. I decided to learn body piercing and ended up performing every body piercing on every customer in the shop for the next three years. I also got some piercings and tattoos of my own just so I would know what it felt like to be in the customers’ shoes. This attitude and M.O. helped fuel the success of that shop.
James Epner, Serial Entrepreneur and Internet Marketing Guru whose interview is outlined on page 117 of my book, has some advice around this tip. He says we should constantly be learning new skills. “Learn as much as you can, whether it’s how to market or how to use technology or how to write code for computers, or whatever it is… because the more you know and the more you know how to do, the more ideas come to you. It’s very difficult to see a good opportunity if you can’t understand how to put it all together.”
And putting it all together for MASSIVE SUCCESS is what I would like to see happen in your life. So, if you haven’t already, take a few minutes to write down some of the ways you can implement (or have already implemented) these five tips for success in your life.
